Key Benefits
The power supplied by electric grids is always alternating current (AC). However, the batteries in your electric vehicle can only store this power as a direct current (DC). AC and DC chargers differ from each other based on where the current conversion takes place.
In an AC Wallbox, the power is supplied from the grid to the charger and from the charger to the car as AC. Inside the car is an “onboard charger,” which is then responsible for converting this AC to DC before the power is delivered to the battery. AC charging is more common among EVs nowadays and is readily compatible with electric connections at home.
For DC Wallbox, the conversion takes place outside the car. The AC that is supplied by the grid is converted to DC by the charger itself. This means that the power coming from the charger can directly be fed to the battery, eliminating any additional steps in between. This key difference enables DC chargers to deliver power and charge EVs faster than AC chargers.
The decision on whether to choose a single- or a three-phase charger relies on your car specifications and charging requirements.
A single-phase charger uses one power conductor alone and delivers 7.4 kW, enough power to charge your car’s battery overnight. It can also be readily installed at home without modifications to the hardware and your electric wirings, making it a common choice for personal use.
A three-phase charger, on the other hand, utilises three power conductors, allowing it to deliver around 22 kW, or three times the power of a single-phase. As a result, this option allows owners to charge their vehicles in a much shorter time, around 2 to 3 hours, from an empty battery to a full charge. Individuals who are always on the go and drive long distances would benefit from this type of EV charger.
Our DC Wallbox can charge two electric vehicles at a time. Considering the shorter charging time, all of your tenants will surely have the opportunity to charge their cars whenever needed.
To know your EV charging electric consumption, you can use the formula:
Charging Cost ($) = EV Battery Size (kWh) x Electricity Rate per kWh ($)
For example, if you are driving a Tesla 3 model with a battery size of 50 kWh and charge it in your home in Queensland, where the electricity rate is 25.39c/kWh, then your cost would be $12.70 from an empty to full battery.
Obviously, there is no single answer to this question because the cost differs based on your vehicle and location, but the formula above should give you a close estimate.
The installation costs vary depending on several factors, including the chosen unit and specification, the available wiring, charging speed, etc.

The AC Wallbox is compatible with Type 1 cable and Type 2 with or without shutter. It does not require any additional hook as the cable can be wrapped around the charger itself.
For the DC Wallbox, CCS1 and CCS2 are available for single output, and dual output comes with CCS1+ CHAdeMO or CCS2+ CHAdeMO.
The best time to charge your EV is during off-peak hours. These are the hours when there are fewer people and appliances using the power provided by the grid. The time may vary across locations, but the consensus off-peak hours start from midnight to early morning the next day.
A smart EV charger offers many benefits. Connecting your EV charger to your smart home allows you to remotely charge and monitor your car anytime. It also delivers energy usage reports directly to your smartphone. These reports could help you understand your energy consumption, carbon emission, costs, and many more.
As an expert in home automation, Cube can help you install a smart EV charger for a more convenient charging experience.
